Open Risk Taker: Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong

The open risk taker is one of the important characteristics that must be present to become a successful entrepreneur. This feature greatly differentiates an entrepreneur and other traders. This is because the risk taken must be accompanied by a sharp scrutiny and decision, which was thought many times. In theory, the higher the risks, the greater the returns. An entrepreneur must make assessments and judgments against the risks because it will ensure their safe return. If the risk is not counted, entrepreneurs will suffer losses.

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was born in 1918 in Anxi, China and he is one of the well-known as a risk taker in the world. His father died when he was 16. Lim was forced to leave school and him and his elder brother had to take over the heavy burden of feeding his family. When China's situation was becoming worse, Lim Goh Tong decided to take the plunge in venturing out to Malaysia (known as Malaya at that time) following his cousin, Lim Kheng Chong's footstep.

Before he develops the best development in his story Genting Highland, he had involved himself in various fields. He had tried working as a farmer and he also engaged in the second-hand machinery trading. From there, he managed to earn his first fortune. After doing some research, Lim found a mountain of Ulu Kali at a place called Genting Sempah to be an ideal location for his plan. He formed an expedition and explored the place, collecting a wealth of data on the topography, drainage, soil conditions and other relevant aspects of the region, this proved to be very useful in drawing up plans for developing the resort.

When he wanted to build a hilltop resort in Gunung Ulu Kali (Genting Highland), many people laugh at him and said that the idea was risky and reckoned Lim, who was financially comfortable to be foolish to invest heavily in money and time to develop Genting, but Lim brushed off all these negativities and went ahead firmly with his plan. After getting approvals from the Federal and State governments, Lim began the project in the face of a colossal task. Among the problems were building the access road towards the hilltop, water and electricity supplies, sewerage system and fire safety. Lim managed to build the access road towards the summit in three years when it was estimated to take fifteen years. Several sources of water in the mountain were identified, the water supply was secured by building water-collection stations and water filtration plants with treated water stored in reservoirs. Electricity is supplied through a central electricity generation system with 12 big generators.

During the construction, Lim survived six close brushes with death. Meanwhile, Lim had to administer another major project in Kelantan, the Kemubu Irrigation Scheme at the same time. This stretched his physical endurance to the limits as he had to shuttle between Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan and he worked seven days a week. During the Genting project, Lim spent all he had without earning any income. He sold an 810-hectare rubber estate to raise RM2.5 million. In addition, he invested all the money he had made from iron mining, sub-contracting and hardware businesses. The project was a heavy drain on Lim's finances. When asked to invest in this project, Lim's friends turned him down and counseled him to drop the entire scheme instead. Finally, on May 8, 1971, Genting Highlands formally start a business after passing through various obstacles, ups, and downs.

Now, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was able to smile as this mega project has managed to become a tourist attraction until now indirectly put him as the richest man in Malaysia. In conclusion, as highly successful entrepreneurs, we have dared to take risks. If we do not dare to take risks, then we will not succeed forever in our lives. Thus, we should imitate Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong's courage, attitude to become a successful entrepreneur. In short, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong is one of the examples that use open risk taker as an entrepreneur.

Not all businessmen are entrepreneurs, but all entrepreneurs are businessmen. Entrepreneurs are those who are willing to take a risk in running and maintaining their business, and commonly seen as the pioneer of new ideas.

Being an entrepreneur is challenging as they take risks to create their new products. That is the reason they need to have the vision of result, whether it is a success or not. Having the visionary features makes you concentrate on the risk of the production to make it fruitful. Visionary entrepreneurs’ objectives are not to make money. They are more engaged in changing the world. They have the vision to change the world and thus this creates more good productions in order to convey something different to the world. Their vision gives them a clear and focused intention of exactly what they want for life and for their business. When they have a clear and focused vision they can take any ordinary business and make it perform in an unprecedented way. When they do this any business they build will accomplish extraordinary results.

Entrepreneurs who have the visionary trait more creative and innovative in light of the fact that they already have the plan of what to produce and how to deliver in achieving enormous results. Additionally, he is very concerned about quality and keeps the trust of the customer as possible. It is also the most important factors for his continued reliable and survives as the best catering service for each and every event or occasion. (Sinar, 2012)

‘Kuzie Catering’ was established 15 years ago and keeps on to excel in spite of numerous sorts of new catering company nowadays. However, his catering service frequently involves in the big event organized by the corporate sector and the government, celebrities, and VIPs. Furthermore, he does not set the price and easily endured by customers. This is the only catering that has no marketing because the customers can call him directly to make reservations. A failure is an option: Gary Swart

Successful entrepreneurs know that anything they do not always succeed. Sometimes the failure is part of the curriculum. Unleashing a lot of things have to try and learn from mistakes, action, and previous experience. Every step that entrepreneurs should take carefully thought through. Therefore, the failure of attempts to produce experiences that can help entrepreneurs to make decisions in the future.

For instance, entrepreneurs like Gary Swart, a former CEO of oDesk. oDesk is a global online employment platform where businesses and independent professionals connect and collaborate from great distances. In 2015, Elance, oDesk has been rebranded as up work.

Before he became CEO of oDesk, he also had to deal with business failure. His first entrepreneurial venture is seeking a company called Intellibank. He feels his company's products are "Drop Box to be bad". Most of us probably have not heard Intellibank, as Intellibank established in a short period of time like many startup businesses do and finally he faces failure, but it is a promising company with smart people. (Shieber, 2014). He expects the company to raise capital and become a large and profitable company, but he faced failure in business.

He learned from his mistakes and analyze what not to do in business. Finally, he managed to understand some important things that can bring success to start a business. Learning that he learned from his mistake gave him the opportunity to become CEO of oDesk.

He has found the market is more important for a product. Despite having the best team and product, but will still fail if the market does not exist. In Intellibank, he did not achieve full product market. This is because every customer asks for something different and he wants to achieve the demands of all customers.

He must develop and focus on only one product because they cannot meet all the requirements of the customer. He is also thinking about business goals must exceed customer expectations. His goal should not be to the extent they meet customer expectations but exceed their expectations. Only with these goals, the new company will win customer loyalty to the brand and its products have a stable customer market.

Overall, Gary Swart is a successful result of business failure. He proved a failure to produce another way to get another success in new business.
